What is a Cultured Pearl?

The Dragon King Pearls collection is made of freshwater cultured pearls, but what exactly is a cultured pearl?

The definition (according to the Cultured Pearl Association, or CPAA) is that a cultured pearl is produced by the human insertion of a bead, a tissue graft, or a bead and tissue graft into a freshwater or saltwater mollusk. The mussel or mollusk is returned to the water and it covers the bead or graft with layers of nacre, creating the cultured pearl.
